Hello there and welcome to the Manor School of Ballet for the start of the 2017/2018 academic year. We hope you have all had a wonderful summer break and are feeling revived and ready for another busy year of dancing and exciting events. If you are joining the school for the first time we very much hope that you settle in and enjoy your classes with us and we'll look forward to meeting you in due course.

When we closed for our summer holidays at the end of June last year, our Edinburgh senior pupils had just completed their bi annual school show at the Church Hill Theatre. Since then we have received some lovely feedback in the office and we would like to say a big congratulations and well done to everyone who participated in The Glass Slipper and who helped us to get the show on stage. It was undoubtedly one of our biggest productions to date and we're sure it has made some lovely memories for the senior leavers of 2017.

Due to the enormity of the show and the storyline, the whole production ran slightly longer than we had anticipated and this in turn has caused a slight delay in the production and issuing of show DVD orders. Please note that if you are waiting on a show DVD, these will be posted or handed out as soon as we receive them in the office. We hope to have them out to everybody within the first two - three weeks of term and we apologise for the delay. If you haven't yet placed an order for a show DVD but you wish to obtain a copy, please remember the closing date is 30th September 2017. Order forms can be obtained from branch secretaries or class teachers.

At the end of last term, we had some sad goodbyes to say to a few members of our staff. Miss Rebeca Lawrie, Miss Lucie Farrimond and Mrs June Adam all departed M.S.O.B to take on new ventures. Each of them will be sorely missed by us all and we wish them all the very best in their new projects. Mrs Adam was a long standing branch volunteer who covered many days at the Main school and Marchmont branch and sadly to date we haven't yet been able to replace her Main school shifts. Miss Lawrie and Miss Farrimond were both former pupils and valued members of our teaching faculty; however, their classes will now be taken with the added help of Miss Fiona (Fifi) Jackson who we welcome on board as a new teacher to the school this year. We also would like to take this opportunity to welcome Mrs Sadie Reed to our team of branch volunteers and we're delighted to announce that she will be in attendance for all enquiries at Marchmont Friday branch.

Please note that in the absence of a secretary at any of our locations; the onsite teaching staff should be contacted in the first instance for any urgent enquiries. If you are wishing to purchase class uniform from us, order forms can be collected at any branch or downloaded and printed yourself from the school website. Orders are processed for the return of uniform the following week, although we do ask for your patience and understanding at peak times.

If you would like to come and buy directly from us we recommend visiting the main school shop on Saturdays between 9am and 1pm. Other opening times are displayed at the main school but are not guaranteed. The main school shop is operated by volunteers and it stocks a selection of class uniform, cards and seasonal gifts, children's books & pocket money toys. Proceeds from the school shop directly support overhead running costs and maintenance projects at the Main school.

In other news - During the summer holidays this year, four of our advanced scholarship pupils who played the principal roles in last year's production of The Glass Slipper, were also fortunate enough to be invited to a join a team of dancers from "Dance Kaleidoscope" on a tour to Los Angeles. While they were away they had the unique opportunity to work alongside some world famous choreographers and some of the biggest names in dance. These four pupils fundraised themselves to be able to go on the trip and we were delighted to hear that they had such a wonderful and beneficial experience. Thank you to everybody who supported these girls at any of their fundraisers last year.

Back in Edinburgh, our annual Summer School at Hampton Terrace was the busiest one we've hosted yet and this year's theme was "At the movies". Along with learning new dance techniques and routines, the children had lots of fun with trying Acro, playing games, sweet making, crafts, musical theatre, our in house cinema, a trip to the beach and of course our big parent's performance finished off the week. Thank you to everybody who supported our summer school this year. It is one of our main fundraisers and it is encouraging that the numbers have steadily increased every year. We're looking forward to next year already and the dates for the diary are Monday 9th - Friday 13th August 2018. Booking will open after Easter.

We also would like to say a big well done to all the pupils who sat their RAD ballet exams last term. The results were very strong across the school and certificates have now arrived. These will be handed out in classes. Junior school ballet, Jazz & Tap UKA awards were also taken in the spring term and these certificates will also be distributed shortly.

For those of you who follow us on Facebook, many thanks indeed to everybody who sent us in their dance pose pictures from their holidays. We were running this as a fun Facebook summer competition and we received lots of entries. We will be creating a canvas of the winning photos to display in the main studio soon. Great effort everyone!

Now looking forward to this coming term, our first scheduled event will be the new scholarship auditions for the 2017-2018 session. All pupils 10 years of age & Grade 4 level ballet who also take Jazz and Tap as a second class are permitted to apply. The Scholarship award is designed for pupils that hold a strong interest in developing dance as a career or profession. It comes with a required and dedicated commitment to internal and external dancing events and this should be considered before applying. Applicants must obtain an entry form from their class teachers if they would like to attend and the auditions will take place on 9th September at the Main school. Please see the entry forms and posters for additional information and times.

Following that the autumn term will also see the return of our popular children's fancy dress Halloween Party in October. Tickets for this event always sell extremely quickly so please watch out for posters and information via social media nearer the time and don't forget buy your tickets early to avoid disappointment. Party date Saturday 28th October.

New classes for this term - We are delighted to announce that Miss Crawford will be running a new Acro class this year. This has been timetabled at 6.00pm on Tuesday evenings at the Main school. Acro is becoming highly sought after in the dance industry at the moment and we're thrilled to be able to offer this to our pupils as a new class this year. Places are extremely limited due to the necessary equipment required. Anyone interested should apply directly to the school office. This class is open to pupils from age 5.

Miss Crawford will also be piloting a series of drop in classes on Friday evenings while we gauge what other styles and genres in dance are currently trending. Information can be found on the notice boards, Facebook and the school website. Drop in classes are open to everyone and payment is made on the door so there is no registration required. Please spread the word and come along to join us if you can. Our usual drop in adult ballet and adult Tap classes (which are ideal for former pupils and parents) remain on the timetable again this year £5.40 per class, as does our drop in baby class on Tuesday mornings for those early starters. All walking babies from 18 months are welcome. £4.00 per class.

Looking a little further forward towards the end of autumn and into the winter term, exam sessions are due in November/December for all subjects and the relevant classes that are due for examination will be notified by letter. Please remember that our closing dates are final and cannot be changed or extended under any circumstances. All our deadlines are set in advance to allow us the necessary time to complete the administration and meet our own external deadlines. A swift return on exam entry forms is always recommended.

Performance news for this academic year will be announced early in 2018. The spring term after Easter will host a junior school show for our Edinburgh based pupils. The show dates have been confirmed week beginning Sunday 10th June 2017. No other information is available at this time. It will be two years this winter since Galashiels branch last performed on stage, so we will be undertaking a review and feasibility study early this term to see what type of show or performance could be offered to our Borders based pupils. Please look out for further information.

Other branch news at this time is quiet and we have no immediate announcements to report from any of our branch schools, we would however like to take this opportunity to remind all our pupils and parents that our branch schools are rented accommodation and therefore we must respect and follow their own onsite rulings. Importantly, for all branch locations, parking is not permitted in the grounds at any of the churches or halls where we hold classes. These rulings are set by the individual churches and are enforced by them to protect their infrastructure. For the safety of children coming and going from classes and to keep our long standing good relationships intact with our external landlords, please can we kindly request that all our patron's park on the surrounding streets when bringing and collecting pupils from classes.
